Official description

A declassified CIA Intelligence Information Report dated December 20, 1973, describing a high-speed craft observed over the USSR. The object was tracked on Soviet radar and reportedly performed maneuvers that outperformed then-state-of-the-art interceptors. One of the Cold War's most intriguing unresolved files.

Curator's note

Read this 1973 Intelligence Information Report for its analytic posture, not its spheres. At the height of the Cold War, each side's default explanation for anything strange was the other side — yet this document tracks luminous objects over the USSR as anomalous phenomena matching neither known Soviet capability nor the CIA's own Aquiline drone program that its authors were supporting. The reported behavior (stationary against high-altitude wind, then departing at speed the report puts above Mach 4) is the same hover-then-depart signature the archive's modern sensor files record. Whether that continuity means anything is interpretation, not finding. What the document establishes is narrower and still remarkable: professional intelligence officers, in writing, in 1973, admitting a category beyond ours and theirs.
